Connections between Venice, Treviso and Trieste airports and Trieste city centre

Depending on where you land, the following options are available:

Landing at Venice airport:

There is a bus service managed by ATVO that connects Venice “Marco Polo” airport to Venezia-Mestre train station (http://www.atvo.it/index.php?lang=en&area=23&menuid=35). The cost of the single ticket (one way, solo andata in Italian), luggage included, is € 8,00 and € 15,00 for the return ticket (andata e ritorno). Tickets can be purchased at the automatic ATVO ticket machine in the arrivals baggage hall, at the ATVO ticket office in the arrivals hall (open from 8.00 to 24.00), at the automatic ticket machines located outside the airport, in the ATVO departure bays, or online at the website above. Travel time is approx. 17 minutes.

Landing at Treviso airport:

ATVO also manages the connection service from Treviso “Canova” airport to Venezia-Mestre train station. The cost of the single ticket (luggage included) is € 12,00, return ticket (7 day validity) €22,00. Tickets can be purchased at the automatic ATVO ticket machine in the arrivals baggage hall, at the ATVO ticket office in the arrivals hall (open from 7.30 to 22.30) or can be purchased on-line on http://www.atvo.it/index.php?lang=en&area=23&menuid=36. Travel time is approx. 55 minutes.

From Venezia-Mestre train station trains run to Trieste Centrale approx. every hour (for info and on-linereservations see https://www.lefrecce.it/B2CWeb/search.do?parameter=searchOutputViewer&cFID=BJQKJkmuO8w3). Tickets start from € 12,90 each way (i.e. from € 25,80 return) but prices can vary quite a lot depending on class and type of train. If possible, it is always advisable to purchase return tickets. Try and avoid trains that travel “via Udine” as this is the longer way round that takes almost 3 hours, as opposed to the faster 2 hour journey “via Portogruaro”. Remember to punch your ticket at the yellow punching machines, before boarding the train, unless you have an on-line reservation (print-out or SMS) which does not usually require punching.

Landing at Trieste (Ronchi dei Legionari) airport:

There is a coach service that connects Trieste airport to Trieste city centre every half an hour between 5 a.m. and 12 p.m. The journey lasts about 55 minutes and the cost of the single ticket (ticket code E06) is € 4,05. Tickets can be purchased from the 24-hour automatic ticket machine (arrivals hall of the passenger terminal) or at the tourist information counter - Infopoint Turismo FVG (departure hall of the passenger terminal). The coach will take you to the Trieste Bus Terminal which is located beside the train station.

In case you decide to opt for a taxi, you can book the service via phone with Taxi Trieste (+39 040 39 00 39) or Radio Taxi Trieste (040 307730, check fares on www.radiotaxitrieste.it/en/) or you can take a taxi directly at the airport. The taxi option may be necessary if you arrive in Trieste very late in the evening or very early in the morning, and can be a good solution if you make arrangements to share the cost of the ride with other participants. Average cost is approx. € 60.

Getting from the Bus/Train Station to the Hotel

The venue of the Congress (Teatro Miela, Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi, 3 - Trieste) is located within walking distance of the train and coach station. The venue of the Workshop (Institute for Mother and Child Health IRCCS Burlo Garofolo, via dell’Istria 65/1 – Trieste) is connected to the centre of town by bus n.10 which run every 8-10 minutes. The bus terminal is located in Piazza Tommaseo (in front of the Greek-Orthodox Church) with stops in Via Mazzini and Piazza Goldoni.

Transport around the City Center

It is quite easy to move around Trieste, provided you have bus tickets. Please ask the hotel reception or the Conference Secretariat if you need further details and guidance. The cost of the ticket is €1.35 and it can be used for 60 minutes from the time it is validated on the bus (240 minutes on Sundays). To validate your ticket, you must punch it by slipping it into the yellow machines located at the entrance of the bus. You will find a ticket dispensing machine (blue machine) at most bus stops. Please be advised that riding a bus without a ticket is subject to a heavy penalty. Please bear in mind that the last regular bus runs around the City center are relatively early. However, there are later buses that run every 30 minutes after 21.30 and until 24.00.
